The first sound a reader hears as they open this collection is the business-like cracking of a young man's neck.

Steven Shrewsbury means business.

I've been enjoying this collection. There doesn't seem to be a lot of continuity, so it's the sort of anthology you can read at your leisure; picking a story at random, or working your way methodically through the book. I don't always finish anthologies. I prefer novels. Still, Dack Shannon kind of wormed his way into my heart, like a well sharpened stiletto.

This is a solid trade paperback collection, with twenty no-nonsense shoot-em-ups. Dack Shannon mixes it up with spies, drug dealers, zombies and mad scientists. A lot of folks have compared Shrewsbury to Robert E. Howard. I think of him more as an Edward S. Aarons. Dack strikes me, (and everyone within fist-swinging distance), as a cross between The Shadow and Sam Durell. The dialogue's a little stiff in spots, and I'd like to know a bit more about Mr. Shannon, but this was a darned enjoyable read. Take it to the beach and wear your darkest sunglasses and tackiest Bermuda shorts. Potato salad and fried chicken, no caviar allowed.
